Celebrating Community with Shared Creativity

Yesterday, Little Changemakers had the privilege of supporting a neighbourhood block party organised by a Residents’ Network. Such initiatives by the People’s Association are significant. They bring people out of their homes and into shared spaces where connection, learning, and joy can grow naturally.

Some participants quietly focused on their projects. Others found gentle pockets of respite: caregivers crafting alongside the seniors they care for, a quiet moment of relief, solidarity, and shared calm.

More Than Just Craft: Building Trust and Rapport

When we run a workshop or activity booth, we do more than provide materials. We spend time getting to know residents: who they are, what they enjoy, how they feel in the moment. We offer encouragement, remind them it’s okay to try, and that there’s no “wrong way” to create.

One touching moment involved two uncles experimenting with UV resin art. Curiously, they asked questions about the curing process. We guided them step by step. At the end, they proudly showed their keychains and said, “Thank you for teaching us something new. We did not expect to learn something new today.”

When the Youngest Learner Becomes a Helpful Assistant

A mother attended with her four children. The youngest, a little girl around four years old, became upset when her craft didn’t turn out as she’d hoped. She grew increasingly frustrated and started disturbing his older siblings. Rather than push her to finish, we asked if she’d like to help as a “workshop helper”, tidying materials and putting caps back on resin bottles.

She took on the role with care and pride. When we thanked her for being such a good helper, her face lit up. Her transformation from a frustrated child into a helpful assistant reminded us: sometimes what a child needs most is encouragement and a sense that their effort matters.

After that, we spoke to his mother, who looked very tired, and told her that her children were very kind and very helpful. She had been speaking to her children in another language, but when we affirmed her and her kids, we could see her smile widen. The little girl said Thank You. Despite language differences, the kindness and affirmation bridged any barrier.

In that moment, it felt clear that encouragement, respect, and kindness do not need a shared spoken language to be understood. They are felt.

What These Moments Teach Us

These two stories: the uncles learning resin art and the little girl becoming a valued helper show that even a simple craft can become:

  • A chance to learn something new

  • A way to build confidence and pride

  • A gentle doorway into conversation, connection, and belonging

From Facilitation to Capacity Building

Stories like these are not just about a successful event; they show the quiet techniques that make inclusion work in real life:

  • Reading non-verbal cues and adjusting the activity flow

  • Supporting caregivers and families without drawing attention

  • Turning frustration into contribution through positive redirection

These are teachable skills. And that’s why we’re now expanding beyond programmes to offer training and consultancy for organisations that want to deepen their community impact.
