Mama Beezy Wrap’s First Community Workshop: Senior Empowerment Through Sustainable Living

For Madam Henrietta, Mama Beezy Wrap began in her own kitchen.

As a mother, grandmother and breast cancer survivor, she has always expressed love through food, family and everyday acts of care. After her cancer journey, she became more mindful of the materials that came into contact with food and began making beeswax wraps as a reusable alternative to plastic cling wrap.

Strawberries stayed fresh for 3 weeks in our beeswax wrap. A small switch that helps reduce food waste and single-use plastic.

At first, she made them for her own family. She used them to wrap food, cover bowls and store fresh produce more thoughtfully. Over time, she refined her recipe and began sharing her wraps with friends and loved ones.

On 14 July, Mama Beezy Wrap took an important step forward. Madam Henrietta conducted her first community workshop with 20 active seniors, teaching them how to make their own reusable beeswax wraps while promoting sustainability, green living and mindful food storage at home.

From Making for Family to Teaching the Community

This workshop was more than a craft session. It was about senior empowerment.

Madam Henrietta stepped into the role of facilitator, sharing her knowledge and guiding other seniors through the process of making beeswax wraps. Participants learnt how the wraps can be used to cover bowls, wrap fruits, pack snacks and reduce the use of disposable plastic at home.

Each senior brought home something practical and meaningful, a reusable wrap they could use for their own food, family and loved ones.

Beeswax Wraps, Sustainability and Green Living

A beeswax wrap is a reusable food wrap usually made with cotton fabric coated in a beeswax blend. It can be used as an alternative to plastic cling wrap for certain types of food storage.

It can be used to wrap fruits, vegetables, bread and snacks, or to cover bowls and containers. After use, it can be gently washed, dried and reused.

Mama Beezy Wrap also carries a simple green living message. When food stays fresh for longer, families can make better use of what they buy and reduce unnecessary food wastage. At the same time, using reusable beeswax wraps helps reduce single-use plastic in everyday life.

Through the workshop, seniors learnt that sustainability does not have to be complicated. It can begin with one small habit, one reusable wrap, one kitchen and one family.

Celebrating Singapore Heritage Through Batik

The workshop also carried a heritage element through the use of batik-inspired fabric designs.

Batik is a familiar and meaningful visual language in Singapore and Southeast Asia, often associated with culture, tradition, family memories and everyday beauty. By turning batik-inspired fabrics into reusable beeswax wraps, participants were not only making an eco-friendly item, but also creating something that celebrates heritage in a practical way.

This made the workshop especially meaningful for seniors. The familiar patterns sparked memories, conversations and a sense of connection to culture, while the finished wrap became something they could use at home or share with loved ones.

In this way, Mama Beezy Wrap brings together sustainability, food care and Singapore heritage in one simple handmade item.
