Meet the Senior Facilitators Bringing Open Village to Life
At Little Changemakers, we believe that seniors are more than recipients of care. They are storytellers, mentors, makers, gardeners, and community connectors.
This belief is at the heart of Open Village, our purposeful ageing initiative that reimagines nursing home engagement through meaningful roles, daily routines, and community participation.
Today, we want to celebrate two amazing senior facilitators: Uncle Lim, and Auntie Lucy.
They are retirees who now support Open Village by engaging residents in warm, purposeful, and familiar ways. With their ability to speak dialects, Chinese, and English, they connect naturally with residents from different backgrounds.
They are not just facilitators.
They are the heartbeat of Open Village.
At Open Village, they help residents care for the garden, vegetables, chickens, and quails. These simple routines create opportunities for residents to participate in real and meaningful ways. Watering plants, observing the animals, or talking about kampung memories can turn an ordinary moment into meaningful connection.
Uncle Lim helps care for the animals at Open Village, creating daily routines that bring curiosity, purpose, and conversation into nursing home life.
They also support art and craft sessions, board games, and befriending activities. More than just running activities, they sit beside residents, encourage them, guide them gently, and help them feel included.
Aunty Lucy supports residents through small group activities that encourage interaction, routine, participation, and companionship.
Their presence has made the nursing home environment more lively and engaging. There are more conversations, more shared routines, and more reasons for residents to come out, interact, and take part.
Uncle Lim notes each resident’s interests and challenges after interactions, helping Open Village create more personalised and meaningful nursing home engagement.
This is what Open Village is about.
It is not just about activities. It is about creating a community where everyone has a role. Through Auntie Lucy, and Uncle Lim, we see senior empowerment in action. Seniors can continue to contribute, guide, care, and bring life into the community.
Because sometimes, meaningful engagement begins with something simple: watering a plant together, feeding the quails, playing a board game, or hearing a familiar voice say hello.
